US Election:

  • JD Vance and Tim Walz faced off in the vice presidential debate on Tuesday. Though the two candidates focused on policies, analysts say this debate is unlikely to make a significant impact on the election’s trajectory.

  • Former Republican representative Liz Cheney endorsed Vice President Harris at a rally in Wisconsin, a key battleground state.

Port Strike:

  • Thousands of dockworkers along the East and Gulf Coasts went on strike, halting the majority of trade at some of the nation’s busiest ports. The union representing about 45,000 workers and port employers have failed to reach an agreement regarding wage hikes and the implementation of automation. However, the strike was quickly suspended after employers offered a wage increase, allowing major ports to reopen.

SpaceX:

  • Following what was initially a weeklong mission that extended into several months on the International Space Station (ISS), two astronauts from Boeing's Starliner program are now nearing the spacecraft that will transport them back to Earth. NASA has opted for the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule to facilitate the return of astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, as their Starliner was deemed too hazardous for crewed flight. The vehicle successfully docked at the ISS on Sunday.

Climate & Health:

  • Hurricane Helene killed over 250 people, becoming the deadliest hurricane to hit the mainland since Katrina. Millions are suffering from damages along southeastern cities. Biden’s homeland security secretary said that FEMA doesn’t have adequate funding for the rest of the hurricane season. President Biden visited Georgia to survey the damage and urged Congress to pass more aid.

  • The CDC confirmed Thursday that two California farmworkers tested positive for bird flu, the state's first human cases. Both worked on dairy farms in the Central Valley with cattle positive for H5N1. Health officials say the public risk remains low but are monitoring the virus closely, as new human infections could lead to mutations and a larger outbreak.
