International

  • Across Syria and Lebanon, hundreds of pagers exploded, killing 11 people and injuring nearly 3,000. These pagers belonged to Hezbollah members, an Iran-back military group. It was reported that Israel hid explosives inside the pagers. Hezbollah has vowed to respond.  


Immigration

  • US immigration officials reported another month of lowered border crossing numbers after President Biden’s executive action. 

  • After former President Donald Trump’s false claims about Haitian immigrants eating pets, dozens of bomb threats in Springfield, Ohio forced the temporary closure of multiple schools and hospitals. 


Donald Trump

  • A second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump took place. The Secret Service spotted a man carrying a gun at Trump’s golf course in Florida. The man, identified by law enforcement as Ryan Wesley Routh, was arrested.


Election

  • Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). During the interview, she denounced Trump’s “hateful rhetoric” on immigrants and vowed to “earn” the Black vote. She also condemned the second assassination attempt on Trump: “We can and should have healthy debates and discussion and disagreements but not resort to violence to resolve those issues.” 

  • Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would guarantee IVF treatments nationwide. This bill sought to make IVFs more affordable and accessible by mandating coverage under employee insurance plans. Senate Democrats are using this as an opportunity to highlight Republicans' opposition to reproductive rights.


Other

  • September 4th Georgia School Shooting: A mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, resulted in the deaths of two 14-year-old students and two teachers, with nine others injured, all expected to survive. This marks the deadliest school shooting of 2024 and the 45th incident this year. The 14-year-old suspect, previously questioned over online threats, used an AR-15-style rifle in the attack.

  • On Tuesday, American rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs pled not guilty to racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking in a federal court after prosecutors claimed he ran a “criminal enterprise."
