International
Middle East:
In what was called a “tragic error” by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an airstrike killed at least 45 people in a Palestinian camp in Rafah. Despite the outrage, President Joe Biden did not change his policy towards Israel because the attack did not cross a “red line.” However, he did endorse a new cease-fire proposal, saying that Hamas was incapable of launching another October 7th attack. Netanyahu said that the war would not end until Hamas was eliminated and all Israeli hostages were returned, signaling a rejection of the proposal.
Russia-Ukraine:
President Joe Biden granted permission for Ukraine to carry out a strike within Russia with American weapons. After this, Ukraine carried out an attack in Kharkiv. However, Biden has stood firm against the use of long-range missiles called ATACMS, which can hit targets from 200 miles away.
Papua New Guinea:
A massive landslide in Papua New Guinea has forced thousands to evacuate their homes. Officials believe that as many as 2,000 inhabitants have been buried alive in the disaster. Rescuers are struggling to reach remote areas.
Domestic
Donald Trump:
Donald Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts in his hush money criminal trial. This is a historic verdict that makes Trump the first former president to be convicted of a felony. Trump responded by calling the decision a “disgrace.” He now waits for his sentencing, which is set for July 11, 2024.
Climate:
Powerful storms have ravaged parts of the central and southern US. Hundreds of thousands of people were left without power and at least 43 dead.
Hawaii has decided to cut off electricity in the event of extreme weather conditions. This decision was made to avoid wildfire disasters similar to the ones seen last year on the island of Maui. This cautionary measure will go into effect July 1st.
