Israel-Hamas War

  • Benny Gantz, a leading member of Israel's war cabinet, resigned on June 9 due to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the war. Only one month prior, Gantz threatened to resign if Israel was unable to effectively demilitarize Gaza, establish an international administration, and adopt proposals for the return of hostages. 

  • The UN Security Council adopted a US-proposed ceasefire resolution. Hamas said they were open to the proposal while Israel promised to continue its military operations without engaging in “meaningless” negotiations. Neither side has committed to carrying this plan through.


Ukraine-Russia

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Joe Biden signed a security agreement, vowing a 10-year military and security partnership. Zelensky acknowledged his hopes that this pact would become a gateway to Ukraine’s admission into NATO.


Other

  • Far-right groups made major gains in Germany, France, and Austria while most member states backed centrists in the European Parliament elections. 

  • In Iran, six candidates are in the running to succeed Former President Ebrahim Raisi after a tragic helicopter crash on May 19, 2024. 

  • The United Nations’ International Organization for Migration reported that at least 49 migrants on a sinking boat have died. The boat was transporting Somalis and Ethiopians across the Gulf of Aden and sank near Yemen’s southern coast.


Sports

  • In the T20 Cricket World Cup, India won its match against Pakistan. Over 34,000 fans and spectators gathered on Long Island, constituting the largest international cricket match held in the US. 

  • Carlos Alcaraz won his third Grand Slam title at the French Open.




Domestic:


Politics

  • Hunter Biden was convicted on three felony counts in his gun trial case. President Joe Biden said that he would respect the federal jury’s decision without pardoning his son. 


Tech

  • Eight former employees of SpaceX sued the company and CEO Elon Musk, claiming that they were illegally fired. The lawsuit complaint said that Musk had created an “Animal House” environment by condoning gender discrimination and sexual harassment. 

  • Apple and OpenAI officially announced their partnership. As a result, Apple briefly became the biggest tech company by market cap, surpassing Microsoft.


Climate

  • In Southern Florida, heavy rainfall has swamped the region, creating hazardous roadway conditions, flooding areas to waist-deep heights, and placing over 7 million residents in danger.
