Mexico:

  • Mexico elected Claudia Sheinbaum, its first female president. 

Israel:

  • After weeks of planning a rescue mission, four Israeli hostages were freed. They have reunited with their families. About 120 Israelis remain in captivity while 30 have died.  

South Korea:

  • Seoul reported hundreds of trash-filled balloons from North Korea. This was in response to South Korea’s practice of sending anti-North Korean propaganda the other way. 






Domestic

Hunter Biden:

  • On Monday, Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, went on trial for gun-related charges. He was accused of purchasing a gun illegally while suffering from a drug addiction in 2018. Biden pleaded not guilty on all three charges. He could face 25 years in prison if convicted. President Biden said he would accept the outcome of the trial and would not pardon his son if he is found guilty.

Immigration:

  • On Tuesday, President Joe Biden announced that the administration would ban refugees who cross the US-Mexico border illegally. This restriction comes as Biden tries to gain control over the immigration crisis weeks before the first presidential debate. 

Climate:

  • In the midst of an outbreak of wildfires across the Western US, over 25 million people were warned of excessive heat. Temperatures were 20 degrees above average, hitting over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Las Vegas reached 111 degrees, California reached 122 degrees, and Phoenix reached 113 degrees.
